I am a linguist specializing in Siniitic languages, with a particular interest in Cantonese and Hakka as well as Mandarin. I approach my work from a sociolinguistic perspective–––that is, I am interested in the interface of language and culture. My other areas of interest are advanced language pedagogy, language assessment, and international education. I am currently doing research on the language of the Chinese diaspora in Cambodia, and mainland South East Asian generally.  I also lead a project gathering oral histories in Cambodia. Outside of my main academic focus in linguistics, I have an interest in creative non-fiction and creating personal essays.
